GM Micro-Challenge Overview
The GM Micro-Challenges are intended to help you appreciate the resources available and challenges associated with international trade. For these assignments, you assume the role of an assistant international trade specialist for an organization that provides export research and assistance to companies. In this capacity, you will engage in research and evaluation related to the specific country (YOUR COUNTRY) and US state (YOUR STATE) which you have been assigned to you for the course. The GM Micro-Challenges involve your responding to memos from your manager. Your responses will require the collection, analysis, and concise provision of the information requested of you in a business memo format. The rubric for this assignment is provided below.
YOUR COUNTRY/YOUR STATE
The list with the country (YOUR COUNTRY) and US state (YOUR STATE) which you have been assigned for the course is in Module 1.
M2 – GM Micro-Challenge: Export Promotion
Your manager’s memo to you is below. In it your manager is giving you tasks to perform with regard international trade. You are not expected to already know the answers, just be able to find and use the resources available to develop an accurate response.
Your response should use a standard business memo format with the proper headings. An example Micro-Challenge memo is provided HERE.
To start, your memo should state its overall purpose, to remind the manager what s/he requested you to do. Next, thoroughly respond to each task you are assigned. For each, briefly restate the task. Then provide a thorough and accurate written response that summarizes the source information you found. Your written response should be supported with (1) images that shows the specific source information you used, and (2) a weblink to each source in case your manager wants to review that information further. Number your responses and respond to the tasks in sequence. Finally, you may choose to provide a conclusion to your memo.
Details on how to insert an image into your micro-challenge using the screenshot or screen clipping tools can be found HERE.
Some additional info regarding supporting images:
1. Supporting images do not replace your written response, they only show the source information used.
2. Supporting images should be visible, not be provided as files. Screen clip them and paste them into your memo.
3. Images should be readable – stretch them to make them large enough to be legible in the memo.

Subject: Export Promotion
Below are subjects that need some research for an agency in YOUR STATE. The agency said they might want to use subscription sources (PIERS, Datamyne, Euromonitor, etc.) in the future to research competitor activity but wanted to try free sources first.
Your efforts will focus on the four specific tasks below. Some potential sources you might find helpful are provided.
1. A government agency in YOUR STATE wants to expand the state’s exports. Determine YOUR STATE’s major exports. Then identify and justify some countries that might be promising for a trade mission from YOUR STATE..
A. Identify one of the top exports from YOUR STATE in the last five years. Include the HS Code and the value in millions of dollars for that year. (Obtain info from a state or federal resource like the US Trade Representative HERE.) The HS code for exports is called the Schedule B code. It is used to track the movement of goods. The website HERE can help you identify the appropriate code for a product.
B. The Observatory of Economic Complexity provides international trade information for countries. A link to their website is HERE. Under the Tools tab, select “Tree Map.” Use the “Bilateral – Exports by Product” option to find the information needed for the top export product you identified for YOUR STATE. Under “Product” select this top export product. Note: You may be able to enter the HS Code to get the export product. If not get as close to the HS Code for that export product as you can. Under “Country,” select “United States.” See image “A” below for the customization settings. Click on “Build Visualization” to obtain a diagram with a question above it. Verify it is the question you were intending to ask. Your image should include the question and look something like Image “B” below. The diagram shows you the countries receiving the most exports of this product from the US. List the countries (up to ten) getting the greatest percentage of this top export product from the US.
C. Next, do another search to determine what countries are buying a lot of this product. Use the “Tree Map” again. Use the “Product – Importers” option to identify what countries import the product. Customize the settings for the top importers of this product. Under “Product” select this top export product. Note: You may be able to enter the HS Code to get the export product. If not get as close to the HS Code for that export product as you can. See image “C” below for customization settings. Click on “Build Visualization” to obtain a diagram with a question above it. Verify it is the question you were intending to ask. Your image should include the question and look something like Image “D” below. The countries that are the top importers of this product will be shown. List the countries (up to ten) that are importing the greatest percentage of this product. This diagram tells you what countries are currently buying a lot of this product in general.
D. Use the two lists you made to identify one country that is importing a lot of this product but is not importing it from the US. This may be a good country to consider for a trade mission. The government of YOUR STATE might consider sending a trade mission there to explore further exports.
2. Determine what import tariff percentage would be associated with sales of that product to that country?
Use the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) – 2018 National Trade Estimate (NTE) on Foreign Trade Barriers HERE.
3. Identify an international trade show to attend for this product.
For the top export from YOUR STATE your selected, identify a large international trade show that is focused on that product and that attracts buyers/sellers from all over the world. Provide the website for the trade show and include when the next one is tentatively scheduled and where.
4. Identify a relevant trade/industry association that may be helpful.
Trade/Industry associations bring together companies within an industry to benefit that industry. They may provide resources that could help an exporter. Identify a not-for-profit trade/industry association for the top export from YOUR STATE you selected. Provide the website for the association and briefly explain what resources the association provides.

This class discussion has only one submission, Post A.
Your post in this forum (Post A) should be made by 11:59 PM Saturday. Please identify your submission as Post A at the start of your post. Submitting your post more than 24 hours prior to its due date will earn a 10% bonus on this assignment. The rubric for this assignment is provided below.
All content (i.e., text and images) must be fully visible in the table. No files should need to be opened to see your post. This requirement allows peers to view content more easily and reduces the likelihood of accidently accessing a problem file.
Note: The list with the country (YOUR COUNTRY) and US state (YOUR STATE) which you have been assigned for the course is in Module 1.
Post A
Your manager is helping to prepare a trade mission to YOUR COUNTRY by business leaders from YOUR STATE. These business leaders will be exploring international trade opportunities there. Your manager will handle all the business appointments.
A part of this trip will be recreational to help foster a greater appreciation and understanding of YOUR COUNTRY. That is the part of the trip that you have been tasked with planning.
Your manager has stated that the activities you propose should provide an authentic experience of the people/culture, so they should involve things unique to YOUR COUNTRY, not things that can be experienced just anywhere.
Do some research on YOUR COUNTRY and then propose two options that would be unique to YOUR COUNTRY for each of the six categories in the table.
Present the introductory information. Then provide your proposed options in a table as shown below. Each of your proposed options should include (A) its name, (B) an image, and (C) a one-sentence description. All this information will be needed in a later module to accurately evaluate your proposed options.
In a future module, several peers will review the introductory information and your proposed options. They will then indicate their preferences in the “Assignment Comments” box. You will use their preferences to customize a trip to YOUR COUNTRY.
Do not include any information regarding travel between YOUR STATE and YOUR COUNTRY. Your trip planning responsibilities will start and end in YOUR COUNTRY.
For this assignment, presume COVID-19 is not a consideration at all.

6-2 Discussion: CSR and DEI in Your Project Team.

Carl Kaysen, an American academic known for coining the phrase “the soulful corporation” to define new, more responsible large companies, believed said companies’ goal was no longer ROI. He proposed that these modern companies identify and target the much larger goal of being responsible not only to stockholders but to all. In today’s world, companies like UPS have mapped deliveries to make as many right turns as possible in order to save time, protect employees, save fuel, and reduce emissions. The NFL, Salesforce, and Walgreens have stepped up their DEI strategies to avoid bias in hiring and promotion of underrepresented groups.
With this in mind, for your initial post, describe the makeup of your project team. Then, address the following questions about your proposed strategy:
What steps are you going to take to promote CSR initiatives? For example: what community programs, nonprofits, or environmental projects will the new product or service support?
How do you plan to attract, develop, engage, and reward your project team?

Discussion

Costs are unique and may be customizable to the organization or industry such as described above. Managerial accounting is concerned with providing information to managers within the organization about costs. Managers expect to know what is included in direct materials, direct labor, and manufacturing overhead. They also expect to know what constitutes product costs and variable costs. The costs of production are substantial and it is incumbent on managers to understand what constitutes their costs.
Choose a manufacturer of a product. Research the company’s costs policies and practices to identify what constitutes direct costs of materials, product costs, variable costs, fixed costs, manufacturing costs, non-manufacturing costs, etc. You may have to research multiple sites to find this information – even the company’s full annual report. Tell the ‘cost story’ of your company with use of graphics or other visualizations. Provide sufficient narrative to explain the story of costs at your company. Include graphics or visualizations to support explanation of cost terms (if available).

Business Question

JW009_MGTS7607_A3-Managing Ethical Issues in Future Essay_1300 words essay
Introduction to the Task
by Marissa EdwardsMarissa Edwards
Lesson 1 of 5
Task Description
As you are aware by now, managers in organisations are confronted with ethical issues and concerns frequently. These can include issues with an ethical dimension, such as corporate social responsibility, or different forms of deviant behaviour, such as sexual harassment, discrimination, and bullying. Despite evidence that ethical issues are prevalent in work settings, business graduates frequently report that they feel ill-equipped to deal with ethical concerns. Many in the media have raised questions about how ethics is taught in university settings and argued that business schools need to do more to ensure that students are more prepared to manage ethical issues when they arise.
Two of the major learning objectives of this course are for you to: (1) Demonstrate knowledge of the practical challenges of managing ethical dilemmas and deviance in the workplace; and (2) Critically reflect on your own values and behaviours and your role as an agent of positive ethical change. In other words, it is important that you understand some of the challenges/difficulties of managing ethical issues in organisations, and also consider how you might prepare to manage these issues effectively in future. While you have already engaged in some reflection in different assessments already, it is hoped that completing this assignment will encourage you to think more deeply about anticipated ethical issues, and how you can increase your readiness to manage such situations.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to consider how a contemporary ethical issue may affect you in your current OR future role in the workplace. Specifically, you will need to discuss your current or future work position and identify one major ethical issue that you have faced, or will likely face, in your role. You are free to choose an issue discussed in the course (e.g., discrimination, sexual harassment, advertising ethics, cross-cultural ethical decision-making, corporate social responsibility, whistle-blowing, etc.) or choose one from the scholarly literature. Following this, you need to identify some of the challenges involved in managing this issue and formulate an action plan to help prepare you to manage the issue in future.
The essay should be approximately 1300 words in length ( /- 10%).
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives of this assignment are to help you:
Be able to identify likely ethical issues (and associated challenges) that you will need to manage in your career
Learn how to search for and apply evidence from the scholarly literature to analyse your chosen ethical issue
Develop an action plan that you can use to increase the likelihood that you will manage your chosen ethical issue effectively in future
Further develop your written communication skills
Writing Your Essay
by Marissa EdwardsMarissa Edwards
Lesson 2 of 5
Writing Your Essay
In order to complete the assignment successfully, you should make sure that you complete the following tasks. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and you should ensure that you read the marking rubric too:
Make sure that you have listened to the recordings and reviewed the slides from seminars. You should also reflect on what you have learnt throughout the course about managing ethical issues.
Identify an ethical issue that you believe you are likely to encounter (or have previously encountered) in your career to date. Make sure that you can explain how this issue is particularly relevant to your work context (e.g., your industry, role, etc). Here, you need to demonstrate why you need to know how to manage this issue and support this idea with research evidence.
Research your chosen ethical issue to identify its prevalence and implications for organisations.
Conduct more research to identify some of the challenges associated with managing this issue. For example, one challenge that is frequently mentioned in the whistle-blowing research is that some organisations have poorly written policies about when and how employees should engage in whistle-blowing. This is also a frequent concern with respect to managing sexual harassment. In other cases, policies may be effectively written but they may not be followed correctly, or sometimes managers do not have a good understanding of the policy and how it should be used. In this section, you should consider your personal context and explain how this may affect how you manage the issue. For example, you may be working in a national culture or society with norms that make managing the issue more challenging.
Following this, you should formulate an ethics action plan. Specifically, your plan should consist of three actions you can take to prepare yourself to manage the ethical issue effectively in future. This should include some identification of relevant gaps in your knowledge, skills and/or experience that could be improved. For example, if you have never undertaken unconscious bias awareness training, research suggests that this could limit your ability to manage certain ethical issues at work. Therefore attending such training is a logical and appropriate action to propose. You should be able to support your proposed actions with evidence from the scholarly literature and your own reflections and/or observations about yourself (if relevant). If you wish to write a detailed plan, this can be included in the Appendix. This plan should not be more than 1 (A4) page long.
Read the Marking Rubric carefully and refer to it regularly while writing your report. Make sure that you structure your report appropriately and proofread thoroughly.
